Ayers Pear Tree (Pyrus communis ‘Ayers’)

The Ayers pear tree is an heirloom variety often referred to as the “sugar pear” due to its very sweet and juicy flesh. The round fruit has a short neck and buttery yellow skin, with a red blush when ripe. This pear is excellent for eating fresh, canning, baking and makes a delicious desert spiced pear.

Sunlight: Full sun minimum 6 hrs per day.

Soil: Well-drained loamy or sandy soil with a pH level of 5.5 to 7.2

Water: Water weekly until established. Water established trees deeply as needed.

Fertilizer: Use a balanced fertilizer in the spring.

The Ayers pear tree is an heirloom variety pear and a favorite of growers in the south. Ayers is often referred to as the “sugar pear” due to its very sweet and juicy flesh. This tree will produce a heavy crop of medium-sized pears that ripen from late July into September. The round fruit has a short neck and buttery yellow skin, with a red blush when ripe. This pear is excellent for eating fresh, canning, baking and makes a delicious desert spiced pear.

Plant in full sun with well-drained, loamy or sandy soil. Ayers pears are self-pollinating; however, your production will increase with other varieties planted nearby. This variety is highly resistant to fire blight. The average height is 18′ – 20′ and 10′ – 15′ wide. Required Chill Hours: 300. USDA hardiness zones 5-9.
