Black Mission Fig Tree (Ficus carica ‘Black Mission’)

The Black Mission fig tree has two harvests each year once in early spring and early fall. This tree produces small, purplish black skinned fruit with sweet strawberry colored flesh and tiny edible seeds. They have a unique sweet flavor and are perfect for eating fresh, or using in deserts, baked goods, jams, sauces or even dried.

Soil: well-drained, sandy loam with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5 that is rich in organic matter.

Water: Water weekly until established. Water established trees deeply as needed. You may need to water more often in times of extreme heat or drought.

Mulching: Mulch annually to protect roots.

Pruning: Prune as needed to maintain size or shape.

The Black Mission fig tree is an ancient variety originating in the Mediterranean and is an evergreen. You will get two harvest each year once in early spring and early fall. The skin of the fruit often cracks when it is ripe. This tree produces small, purplish black skinned fruit with sweet strawberry colored flesh and tiny edible seeds. Plant in full sun and well-drained slightly acidic soil. Black Mission figs are self-pollinating, but planting pollinating partners can increase the size of your crops. Average height 10′ – 30′ and width 15′ – 30′. Required Chill Hours: 100. USDA Hardiness Zones 7 – 9 (outdoors)
